BEYOND BUGS

Gameplay Experience QA looks at a game from the perspective of the person actually playing it.

I analyse how players understand mechanics, discover systems, make decisions, respond to feedback and progress through the experience.

The goal is not simply to determine whether something works, but to understand whether it works clearly, intuitively and effectively for the player.

WHAT I TEST

01

GAMEPLAY CLARITY

Do players understand what they can do, why they should do it and how the game's systems interact?

02

ONBOARDING

What does a new player understand naturally, and where do instructions or additional guidance become necessary?

03

UX / UI

Menus, HUD elements, navigation, readability, interaction feedback and other potential sources of player friction.

04

DIFFICULTY & PROGRESSION

How difficulty develops, whether progression feels fair and whether the player understands how to improve.

05

PACING & ENGAGEMENT

Identifying moments where the experience becomes especially engaging, repetitive, frustrating or slow.

06

EXPLORATION & AGENCY

Whether players feel encouraged to explore, experiment and make meaningful decisions for themselves.

07

SYSTEMS & GAMEPLAY LOOPS

Economy, progression, builds, resources, combat systems, player incentives and interactions between mechanics.

08

EMERGENT BEHAVIOUR

Unexpected interactions, unusual system behaviour and situations that emerge naturally from player actions.

09

BUGS & UNEXPECTED INTERACTIONS

Functional issues, softlocks, unintended paths, broken interactions and other problems discovered naturally during play.

MY APPROACH

PLAY → OBSERVE → EXPLORE → INVESTIGATE → DOCUMENT → RECOMMEND

I don't always follow the intended path.

I explore areas that may not appear important, try unusual interactions, test different combinations of actions, revisit locations after progressing and generally investigate what happens when a real player starts experimenting.

This can reveal both traditional technical issues and player-experience problems that may otherwise be difficult to identify.

PLAYER EXPERIENCE + FUNCTIONAL QA

Gameplay Experience QA and Functional QA are closely related, but they ask different questions.

FUNCTIONAL QA

Does the feature work correctly?

Bugs are identified, reproduced and documented with clear steps and expected versus actual behaviour.

GAMEPLAY EXPERIENCE QA

What happens when a real player interacts with the feature?

The focus is on understanding, usability, clarity, friction, player behaviour and whether the game's response makes sense from the player's perspective.

REPORTING & DELIVERABLES

My feedback is structured to give developers useful information they can actually act on.

ADAPTABLE TO THE PROJECT

Every game requires a slightly different approach.

A session can focus on a specific area such as onboarding, combat, progression or difficulty, or cover the broader player experience from the first interaction through longer-term engagement.

I can also adapt the testing approach to the project's genre, development stage and specific questions the development team wants answered.
